The "Town of the Queens", Veszprém with its 62.000 inhabitants lies on a limestone plateau in the middle of Transdanubia, where the wood covered hills of "Bakony" and the Balaton upland meet each other.
Its 1000 year-old history goes far back into the past. It used to be royal residence, where the first bishopric of the country had been established by St. Stephen, the first Hungarian king. The king's wife Gizella built the St. Michael cathedral, which meant to be dominated by the Queen in power. A royal palace also had been built for the Queen. That's where the honorific name "Town of the Queens" comes from. The Coronation Cope (what supposed to be a mass garment originally) was made in the Veszprém Valley Nunnery. The Queen herself is considered as one of the cope makers.
The town is an ecclesiastical center, archdeaconry since its origin. The first Hungarian College was established in Veszprém too.
In our days Veszprém is the cultural capital of the region, home of the "Universitas Vespremiensis".
More than 10 000 students study in ten high schools and two colleges of the town. The dramatic performances of the Petőfi Theatre are recognized countrywide. The shows and musicals of the Pannon Várszínház make the life of the city even more exciting. The Latinovits Zoltán Játékszín with its intimate atmosphere enables the theatre fans to enjoy the play really close to the stage. We are also proud of our worldwide known sportsmen, Balázs Kiss the Olimpic Champion of hammer throw, and the MKB Veszprém KC Team, which is considered to be a member of the Handball's elite.
Beyond the cultural heritage and sights we also offer several programs in Veszprém.
